Physical exertion, environmental exposure, and unpredictable conditions can quickly lead to dehydration. Dehydration impairs cognitive function, reduces physical endurance, and increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, all of which can compromise the effectiveness of SAR operations.

Daily Fluid Requirements

The average adult requires approximately 2 to 3 liters (67-101 ounces) of water per day under normal conditions. However, SAR operations often involve strenuous activity, high temperatures, and heavy gear, which can increase daily fluid needs to 4-6 liters (135-203 ounces) or more.

  • Moderate Activity, Temperate Climate: 3-4 liters (101-135 ounces) per day
  • High Activity, Hot Climate: 5-6 liters (169-203 ounces) per day
  • Cold Environments: Hydration is still critical; cold-induced diuresis and respiratory water loss can require 3-5 liters (101-169 ounces) per day
Signs and Risks of Dehydration

If left unaddressed, dehydration can progress to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which are medical emergencies in the wilderness.

Best Practices for Staying Hydrated
  • Pre-hydrate: Begin hydrating before the operation starts, especially if strenuous activity is anticipated.
  • Drink Regularly: Sip water every 15-30 minutes instead of waiting for thirst.
  •  Monitor Fluid Intake: Track how much water you consume, aiming to meet or exceed the recommended amounts based on activity and climate.
  • Use Electrolyte Solutions: When sweating heavily, supplement water with electrolyte drinks to replenish lost salts.
  • Carry Adequate Water: Use hydration packs, water bottles, or bladders. Plan for water resupply or purification if the operation is extended.
  • Purify Wilderness Water: If sourcing water from streams or lakes, always use filters, boiling, or chemical treatments to prevent waterborne illness.
