Physical Hazards of High Altitudes
At higher altitudes, the oxygen levels in the atmosphere decrease, leading to hypoxia, a condition where the body or a region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply. SAR personnel and those being rescued are particularly vulnerable to hypoxia above 8,000 feet. Symptoms include dizziness, shortness of breath, confusion, and even loss of consciousness. If left unaddressed, hypoxia can be life-threatening.
Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a common hazard in high-altitude SAR operations. Symptoms such as headache, nausea, fatigue, and disrupted sleep can impair an individual’s ability to perform complex tasks. Severe forms, such as high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), are life-threatening and require immediate medical intervention.

High altitudes accelerate water loss through breath and perspiration, increasing the risk of dehydration. Dehydration can severely impact cognitive function, decision-making, and physical endurance, all of which are critical in SAR operations.
The combination of reduced oxygen levels, cold temperatures, and increased physical exertion contributes to faster exhaustion. Fatigue jeopardizes the safety of SAR teams, as it impairs judgment and reduces reaction times.

Acclimatization
Allowing time for acclimatization can significantly reduce the risk of altitude sickness and related conditions. Gradual exposure to higher altitudes lets the body adapt to reduced oxygen levels. However, due to the urgency of most SAR missions, it is likely time cannot be taken for acclimatization.
